I think that this weeks experience has been my favorite. I liked that we could all share personal experiences about our parents and how we have learned from them. I enjoyed listening to the author who came to understand more about his family. The fact that he was from Detroit made it more personal to all of us. This week has allow us to take an interest in learning more about our family members and understand how there past have shaped decisions we could have we overcome challenges.

I could relate to this week because I have multiple family members that were treated poorly because of their mental illness. I think that family members today might have a better understanding on how to treat and cope with an individual with a mental illness. Some families might isolate that person, but I don’t think they would have the treatment as to not even discuss a family member's existence.
When the doctor states the condition of Annie, I just kept thinking of my great grandmother and all the struggles she went through suffering from schizophrenia .   I am glad that our society has improve the treatments and awareness of a mental illness, however there is still stigma and discrimination from society regarding individuals who have a mental illness.
