Looking at “Our America with Lisa Ling”

” I always knew my parents’ generation -- and their parents' generation -- were, in so many ways, living resources with precious stories to tell.”

The first statement reminded me of The Giver and their cultural ideals of how their society is suppose to behave and act among a set of rules. Since their culture did not have memories and experience with love and relationships, they had no understanding of process of developing change. It is important to pass down knowledge,  a shared bonding experience with your family. Without memories of our past generations, how can we learn and appreciate our elders?  It shows us how we have seen society change throughout generations after generations.

I’ve learned a little bit about how older adults feels about growing old in America. Society might have expectations of older adults however; there is a vast majority of older adults embracing the aging process. Our generation is accepting aging. I just don’t understand why people find it uncomfortable to discuss health and sexual relationships while they age. We need to have more age appropriate age about safe sex with older adults.

Say we were faced to live in that type of society in The Giver. If you were living in that society now, what challenges do you think you would have the most trouble coping with? (The memories, fear, love and relationship, or following the rules)

American still does not have an exception of older adults and sex. When do you think societal expectations of older adults will be more excepting?
