The module this week focused on the attitude that society has on the ageing process. It discussed that ageism is present in our society. I think that the image of older adults could shift in our society. I think that stereotyping or castings  are taught at a young age and maybe even unintentionally. They can be learned through media such as films, commercials, advertising, and through families’ customs. As we seen in the media, there are images that older adults play. I always picture the movie Grumpy Old Men or the movie Up. I think that picturing an older adult who is hard of hearing or uses ambulatory assistance is more of common theme. There are many consequences of the stereotypes on older adults and social workers need to advocate for change. With the immense growing population of older adults,I think it is important for social workers to examine the attitudes that younger people have on older people. Presenting these issues that are reflected in media and with advertising can help to social workers to advocate for positive change.

I also learned a lot about poverty level and the way it can affect individual in their aging process.  Having an income of less than 60 per cent of the average income in the UK population on a whole. I learned some statics such as 1.2 million pensioners have no income other than state retirement pension. Poverty is an issue that the indigent population is facing. In addition, a statement that suggest that individuals are not poor, but they have enough to get by. I think that some individuals feel that if they have clothes on their back, bread and fruit on their table, then that is good enough, and it is more than others have.

Another significant idea that was discussed in the book The Giver is the idea that The Elders are held to the highest honor in the community. Older people  have their own attitudes and wisdom is looked at as respect because with age, comes wisdom. Many cultures adapted these values in their society that the old are perceived as wise because of their age. In many cultures, the young have a care management process with the older adults in their community. They are also very expressive in the death and dying process. It seems like in our society it is the other way around, and we have older adults caring for their young and themselves.

My experience with Weebly site has been a learning experience. I have had some experience in my BSW seminar class building a website and with other networks. We had to create a Google site before we graduated, and I think it was much easier to navigate than this Weebly site. This week, I am becoming more familiar with this site and it is easier to navigate. This is my first online class, and I am slowly but surely, trying to understand everything. I enjoy that we can add multiple pictures that allows us to develop our creative side that cannot be seen inside a classroom. I wanted to post pictures and quotes that would align with the social work code of ethics and my own values.
