This week we were provided with many statistics on mental health with older adults. I learned about how many people live in the UK community suffer from dementia. I also learned that depression is more prevalent in later life.  Men over 75 are at a great risk of completing suicide that any other.  I think these statistics are important to know as social workers. Since I will be working with generally older adults, its important to know these statistics to provide them with the resources that are available. As social workers, I will get up to date on the mental health resources and statistics.

Another important issue that I learned is about the wide range specialist services that are available to older adults. The Carepathway was discussed to understand the services available .I chose this example because I work in a hospital that deals with a lot of discharge planning, I think it is interesting to see the mainstream care that is available during the hospital and after they leave the hospital. Understanding the 6 levels of care for mental health patients will be important for me.

Online Assessment

Although I did fairly well in the assessment, I was surprised on the statistics this week. I would like to see how the U.K compares to the U.S and whether they have similar statistics. I was surprised with how many people have dementia. I guessed 500,000, I did not think it was as high as 700,000. I also found the schizophrenia statistic  fewer 100 for 100,000 people.  “What proportions of older people with moderate to serve dementia live in the community?” I chose two-thirds majority live in the community and a third live in care homes and I was correct. This statistic was not surprising because of my previous understanding of dementia in my aging class.

Question

My question this week is focused on “The Giver”. I really enjoyed this week’s reading. The more I was reading the book, the more I understood Jonas’s feelings in that  type of community. I have a few questions in regards to the book.

There are so many rules in their society like being assigned to certain jobs at the age of 12,  being assigned to a love interest, not being able to ask questions, having no memory or experience of pain, love or fear,  only being allowed to adopt two children ,” being released if you do not follow a set of specific rules,” and not being able to have desirable thoughts. If our society were more based on this type of civilization, would you try to escape or fight their beliefs and push for change?

A question for the module is that the module expressed how the UK delivers services, I was wondering if they are different from the U.S?
